Meet the Founder

My name is Rebecca Ritterband and I am a senior at Manhasset High School in Manhasset, New York. Freshman year I met my music teacher, Mr. Van Schenkoff, one of the most influential people in my life. He discovered a beautiful voice that I didn't even know I had, and continued to push and encourage me to pursue my musical talents. For my whole life, though, I have been an athlete and in high school I am involved in three varsity programs (Soccer, Basketball, Lacrosse). Being a tri-athlete represents a big time commitment, and I often find myself struggling to find a balance between athletics and music. My sophomore year I was selected for the All-County chorus, a very prestigious honor that I was proud and excited to engage in. However, when the rehearsal schedule was announced, I had to withdraw from the choir in order to maintain my position as a starting guard on the basketball team. This was a difficult decision for me, and it was heartbreaking to feel like I was choosing between athletics or music. This feeling has left an impression upon me, prompting me to create a virtual community that can help other athletes who’ve had to make secondary their love for vocal or instrumental music. I hope to make this a resource for athletes to share their often-hidden musical talents and create opportunities to bring people together through a shared passion for music.

My name is Lance Goulbourne and I am a professional basketball player from Brooklyn, New York. I graduated from Vanderbilt University in 2012 and have been traveling the world playing basketball since. My career has taken me to countries such as South Korea, Turkey, France, and Mexico. Although basketball may be my career, it is not what defines me. I learned from a young age that pouring yourself into athletics does not make you a fully well rounded person, which I believe to be very important in a person’s life. That’s not to say that you shouldn’t pursue your passion in sports with everything you have, but rather to tap into other avenues of life while achieving your sports dreams. In my opinion, maintaining a high level of academic excellence comes first before anything. One day the ball will stop bouncing for me and I’ll have my education to fall back on. Aside from this, trying different things such as an instrument, fine arts, or even technology, can add to your well-rounded value. Becoming less one-dimensional can open many doors for everyone, not just an athlete, and create endless opportunities. I support the Athlete’s Voice and Rebecca’s mission to connect the talented young athletes who work hard to manage to stay committed to more than just sports.
